Festival Jazz & Wine 2012 Bordeaux : Concert Herbie Hancock Quartet




Jazz and Wine présente ce festival. Inauguration exceptionnelle du festival « Jazz And Wine », en présence de l’un des plus grands noms de l’histoire du Jazz : le pianiste Herbie Hancock. An evening with Herbie Hancock and his band Il se produira en quartet le 02 Juillet 2012 avec Lionel Loueke, James Genus et Trevor Lawrence.

Born in Benin, a small country of west Africa, Lionel first picked up percussion instruments before choosing guitar at the age of 17.
In 1990, he moved to Ivory Coast for a general musical training in the “National Institute of Art” which lasted four years. As he was listening to outstanding jazz musicians such as Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, George Benson, he was definitely convinced that he needed to improve his playing. The next step would be to enroll in a well known jazz school.
In 1994, he was accepted at the “American School of Modern Music” in Paris (France) where he got his Diploma in 1998.
The dreams were coming true. In 1999, he was awarded a scholarship to “Berklee College of Music” in Boston, Massachussetts. He quickly graduated in 2000 majoring in Jazz Performance.


In 2001, he auditioned for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, and was selected in a world wide search by a panel of judges including jazz legends Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard and Wayne Shorter. He studied on this full scholarship at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, until may 2003.
In 2002, while still at the Monk Institute, he stated playing with trumpet player and film music composer Terence Blanchard. He recorded two albums with him, the second one on the famous Blue Note label.
Between 2003-2006, Lionel lives in New York and plays around the world. He played onTerence Blanchard last CD and DVD “Flow”. Also on Herbie Hancock’s last CD and DVD “Possibilities”. He also recorded two CD’s under his own name, “In A Trance” (Space Time) and now, “Virgin Forest” his highly-anticipated debut on ObliqSound.
He studied with: Mick Goodrick, John Damiam, George Garzone, Russell Ferante, Joe Diorio, Terence Blanchard, Dave Holland, Kenny Barron, Steve Turre, John Scofield, Louis Nash, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter
and many others.

Trevor Lawrence, Jr. (a.k.a.TrevBeats) is one of R&B and hip-hop’s best and most popular drummers for sessions and touring. In a day and age where the art of musicianship is being traded in by technologica
l advancement, Trevor Lawrence, Jr. (a.k.a. TrevBeats) emerges as a multi-talented music producer and drummer who’s body of work speaks to both worlds seamlessly. As one of R&B and hip-hop’s most sought after session and touring drummers, Trevor has made a name for himself playing alongside some of the most famous recording artists and musicians on the planet. He has also experienced extreme success as a highly accomplished music producer as he’s contributed to a myriad of albums that, since 2000, have been nominated for Grammy awards every year. Trevor’s DNA provided him with the platform for his unrelenting work ethic and success. He grew up in an environment permeated with music thus making his connection to music undeniable. His father, Trevor Lawrence Sr., is one of music’s most renowned tenor saxophone players and horn arrangers in the business. Having played with artists as diverse as Marvin Gaye, Lynryd Skynyrd, B.B. King, and Ringo Starr, Trevor, Sr. was able to help plant the seeds of his son’s passion for music at a very early age. Trevor’s mother is a highly accomplished vocalist who performed on Stevie Wonder’s landmark 1970’s album, Songs in the Key of Life and is a member of the legendary singing group, The Supremes.
At the age of two, Trevor stepped right into the footsteps of his parents and has embarked upon a musical journey envied by most of his contemporaries. Trevor lists two of his most notable accomplishments as having played alongside Jazz great Dizzy Gillespie at the tender age of 13, and his performance, with Stevie Wonder, in front of one million people at Live 8 in Philadelphia. Over the years, Trevor has honed his craft by touring and doing studio work with some of the biggest names in music. In addition to his own group, the E.A.T. Trio (Electro Acoustic Trio), Trevor’s played with artists as wide ranging as Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Ashanti, Jennifer Lopez, Taj Mahal, Dr. Dre, Macy Gray and The Temptations. In 2006 he toured with Snoop and most recently appeared on Eminem’s album Relapse that has been certified double platinum. He is currently working with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent on their forthcoming projects.


In 2010 he toured with Herbie Hancock: A force to be reckoned with, Trevor Lawrence, Jr., continues to inspire his contemporaries and fans of his work with well respected catalog and die hard work ethic. Through his work, he is able to infer that determination, dedication, and passion for what you do will always result in positive results. Trevor is currently penning a coffee table book that chronicles his music industry milestones and the life lessons utilized to make his goals a reality. Trevor Lawrence Jr. endorses Meinl Cymbals and performed at the Meinl Drumfestival 2007 with Concert and Masterclass Drumclinic. 






American jazz bassist. He plays both electric bass guitar and upright bass and currently plays in the Saturday Night Live Band. Genus has performed as a session musician and sideman throughout his career, with an impressive list of artists with whom he has worked.Genus was born in Hampton, Virginia. He began on guitar at age six and switched to bass at 13. He studied at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1983 to 1987 where he studied under jazz great Ellis Marsalis (father of Branford, Wynton and Delfeayo). Receiving a degree in jazz studies, he later moved to New York and played and recorded acoustic and electric bass for some of the biggest talents in jazz, including David Sanborn, Bob James, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Wynton Marsalis, who is called the most influential jazz musician of his generation.
